Jessica Liang

Commerce/Law Scholarship student

This semester I have just completed Principles of Public law, Legal Method and Reasoning, Introductory Microeconomics, and Accounting Reports and Analysis. Melbourne University was my first preference, because of the Law School's reputation, the wide range of optional subjects offered, and the facilities it provided. Currently, I am definitely considering a law related career, perhaps in the area of human rights law. My interests include participating in mooting and witness examination (of course!) as well as piano, badminton and reading.

I would encourage students considering law to look over the course curriculum on the website and talk to law students on Open Day. Although law is a very competitive course to get into, Melbourne's Access program allows many more students to be offered entry. This results in a more diverse student body and means that prospective students should not feel that law is beyond reach.

Before I started law there was a prevailing misconception among my friends that law was a dry subject which would quickly overwhelm me with boredom. After studying a semester of law, however, I have discovered that this is yet to happen. To date, I have found the experience to be very enjoyable, despite the huge amount of reading involved. The quality of teaching has been high and the course has been made more engaging through the use of seminars rather than lectures.
