Course Planning Information

Important Information for 2009

There will be some changes to the policies and procedures for the LLB in 2009. The major changes are set out on the Important Information for 2009 webpage.

Course Rules & Policies

Students are advised to familiarise themselves with rules and policies governing all aspects of their enrolment in undergraduate law degree programs. As a general principle, students are encouraged to make an appointment to speak with a student adviser in the Melbourne Law School Student Centre on the Mezzanine Level of the Melbourne Law School (Tel: +61 3 8344 4475 or email law-studentcentre@unimelb.edu.au) for advice on any matter that might  impact upon normal course progression.

Course Planning

Formal course plans for all single and double degree law programs offered by the University of Melbourne are available. LLB students are strongly advised to follow the formal course plan for their particular degree or double degree program to ensure that compulsory subjects are completed in the stated order. This is extremely important as compulsory subjects will be progressively offered for the final time, based upon normal course progression expectations. The time-line for the expected final offering of compulsory subjects can be located online. Other useful references for course planning are:

Final Semester of Offering for Compulsory and Quasi-Compulsory Subjects 2008-2011

You can also view the year of offering of compulsory and quasi compulsory subjects in 2008 to 2011.

Student Progress

The Law School is committed to ensuring that all existing LLB students are provided an extensive range of academic support services and resources. These are located on the Learning & Support section of the LLB website. The Law School will offer alternative arrangements each semester to accommodate students who have failed a compulsory or quasi-compulsory subject being offered for the final time. This is subject to University Statute 11.5 Unsatisfactory Progress.

Leave of Absence

Under existing Law School policy, students wishing to take a break from their studies for any reason (including Student Exchange or Study Abroad) must make a formal application to the Law School for approval. Leave of Absence is granted at the discretion of the Law School and may be restricted depending on the compulsory Law subjects a student would normally be required to do during the period for which they have sought leave. The Law School's Leave of Absence policy can be located in Section 16 of the Course Rules and Policies.

Student Exchange/Study Abroad - Law Degree Component

Students are generally expected to have completed their compulsory subjects before going on exchange. Applications are, however, assessed on a case-by-case basis. Students wishing to undertake an exchange before their final year should make an appointment to discuss their situation with the Faculty Exchange Advisor before applying. Information on Student Exchange and Study Abroad programs, including selection criteria, can be located online.

Student Exchange/Study Abroad - Non-Law Degree Component

Students planning to undertake a Student Exchange or Study Abroad program within the non-law degree component of their double degree must consult with a student adviser at the Law School before submitting their application. Careful planning is required to ensure that normal course progression is maintained.
